Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, then moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of three after his parents died. He was raised as a foster child by John and Frances Allan. Growing up he did very well in primary school, and attended one year at the University of Virginia until he was no longer able to pay for it (Poets.org). Poe is one of the most well-known writers in American history and authored many famous poems and short stories. One of Poe’s most famous short stories is The Cask of Amontillado, which is a story based on the theme of revenge. The narrator, Montresor feels that he has been wronged by a man named Fortunato and plans to get his revenge by trapping him in a tomb and leaving him to die. Poe takes a different point of view on the story’s main theme of revenge. Since the story is being told 50 years after the incident, it leads the reader to believe that the revenge and closure Montresor was looking for didn’t happen (Baraban). Poeà ¢â‚¬â„¢s use of a dark and twisted plot, irony, and a vengeful and unreliable narrator shows that contrary to popular belief revenge doesn’t always satisfy an individual’s need for closure. A lesson before dying 2 Essay Report In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying, By Ernest Gaines, the main character, Grant Wiggins gives a man meaning in his last days alive. Wiggins gives him a book to write his thoughts in, and helps him to realize that he is not a hog. He shows him that he is truly a good person, and that he should die with his head up, knowing that he led a worthy and honest life. Mr. Wiggins changed greatly through the story, from a cold school teacher to an open hearted and caring man. This helped his relationship with others as well as Jefferson. Through his changing, he became the one man that Jefferson could trust. In a rural town in Louisiana in the late 1940s a poorly educated young black man, Jefferson, is in the wrong place at the wrong time: he is in a bar with two friends when they murder the white bartender. Jefferson is unfairly convicted of murder and sentenced to the electric chair by a white judge and jury. His defense lawyer, in an attempt to ward off the death sentence, labels him a hogand it is this label that Jeffersons godmother wants disproved. She enlists the help of a plantation school teacher, Grant Wiggins, who at first isnt too keen on the idea of helping a crook. Wiggins agrees to talk with Jefferson only out of a sense of dutyhe is an unhappy, angry man who dreamt of escape from his deprived childhood yet returned to his hometown after a university education to teach in the same one-room parish school he attended. Despite humiliation at the hands of the white sheriff, Jeffersons lack of cooperation, and his own sense of futility and uncertain faith, Wiggins forges a bond with Jefferson that leads to wisdom and courage for both. At first, Jefferson sees himself as a hog, and nothing but a hog. It takes Wiggins much time and strength to convince him that he should live his last days with pride and dignity. Jefferson looks at the entire situation as his fault and will only do what Miss Emma and Tante Lou see fit for him to do. If thats what they want, Jefferson said. No, not what they want; what you want, says GrantIf thats what they want, Im gon die anyhow, says Jefferson.(p.135) Wiggins begins his teaching as he has taught for years, which is not allowing it to change his life. However, as he continues to teach Jefferson, he not only speaks, but starts to listen and learn. Jefferson sees that he should let Wiggins into his life, and he starts to change. I saw a slight smile come to his face, and it was not a bitter smile. Not bitter at all. A hog cant show emotions, but a man can. At this moment, he developed from a hog to a man. This is the focal point of the story, and from this point on, both men look at life completely differently. There is the epiphany of the story, where Mr. Wiggins realizes that the purpose of life is to help make the world a better place, and at that time he no longer minds visiting Jefferson and starts to become his friend. Mr. Wiggins relationship with his aunt declined in this story, although it was never very strong. His aunt treated him like he should be a hog and always obey, yet she wanted him to make a hog into a man. His aunt was not a very nice person, she would only show kindness towards people who shared many of her views, and therefore was probably a very hard person to get along with. Victor Hugo And Gueux Victor Hugo's piece depicting the ill-fated criminal Claude Gueux is a portrayal of a common theme that happens in every day life. Gueux was an honest family man that turned bad due to the environmental factors of Paris, these factors made a rational man into an irrational man. This situation is something that makes and breaks thousands every year; they are forced by their surroundings and lack of opportunities to resort to crime. When confronted with famine and hostile conditions, Gueux was forced to make the decision of letting his family starve or stealing a few essential items in order for the welfare of his family. He choose the latter and was eventually caught and punished for his actions; while his sentence of five years was rather severe. While in prison, a man who was kind and a good companion befriended him; the warden eventually separated these two. Once again he faced with the choice of letting all that he knew and loved in prison or ratifying the situation. His final action was murdering the warden. This action leads him to his death. This brings the often-disputed psychology question; does the environment we embrace affect our actions? Many will say yes and many will say that every action is done out of choice of the person and cant be blamed on any other factor. My personal view straddles the fence; I believe that we are affected severely by our environment, yet it does not make decisions for us but merely affects them. Gueux was an example of how mankind will do anything to achieve happiness and sustain life. While he did have the option of getting a job and being an honest man, his family did not, they were cold and starving. He acted rationally according to the situation he was in. His actions in prison however were rash and irrational, in both situations it was the environment and society that made he act in such manner. When placed in certain situations, humans only have a few viable options. If you say that every American has the equal opportunity as the next, you are severely misinformed. From the schools to the legal system, everything is geared towards the satisfaction of the rich. The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer, this is how it has been for thousands of years and will continue for thousands. This was the case of Gueux; he was poor and had very little options of keeping his family alive and his happiness in prison.
