Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, then moved to Richmond, Virginia at the age of three after his parents died. He was raised as a foster child by John and Frances Allan. Growing up he did very well in primary school, and attended one year at the University of Virginia until he was no longer able to pay for it (Poets.org). Poe is one of the most well-known writers in American history and authored many famous poems and short stories. One of Poe’s most famous short stories is The Cask of Amontillado, which is a story based on the theme of revenge. The narrator, Montresor feels that he has been wronged by a man named Fortunato and plans to get his revenge by trapping him in a tomb and leaving him to die. Poe takes a different point of view on the story’s main theme of revenge. Since the story is being told 50 years after the incident, it leads the reader to believe that the revenge and closure Montresor was looking for didn’t happen (Baraban). Poeà ¢â‚¬â„¢s use of a dark and twisted plot, irony, and a vengeful and unreliable narrator shows that contrary to popular belief revenge doesn’t always satisfy an individual’s need for closure. The dark and twisted plot of this short story hooks the reader at the beginning, but in the end you find out that Montresor is telling the story 50 years later, leading one to think that the incident still bothers him.
